Does my child need a mouthguard for sports?

Answer: Yes!

Back-to-school also means back to sports! Whether your child is playing football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, hockey or another sport, it’s a good time to think about protecting their smile.

A properly fitted mouthguard can help protect against chipped or broken teeth, injuries to the lips and cheeks, and other dental trauma. We especially want to protect those permanent teeth that your child will have for the rest of their life!

For sports with a higher risk of contact or collision, a mouthguard is an important piece of protective equipment. A mouthguard should fit comfortably, stay securely in place, and allow your child to breathe and speak without constantly needing to adjust it.

There are several types of mouthguards available, including stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-fitted mouthguards. While any mouthguard is better than no mouthguard, a properly fitted mouthguard provides the best combination of protection, comfort, and retention.

And remember, mouthguards aren’t just for football! Accidents can happen in any sport.

If your child plays sports and you’re not sure what type of mouthguard is best, ask us at their next visit. We’d be happy to help keep their smile protected all season long!
