Are Cavities Contagious?
"Are cavities contagious?"
It may sound surprising, but cavities themselves aren’t contagious, but the bacteria that cause them can be. Cavity-causing bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) can be passed through saliva, especially from caregivers to young children. Things like kissing, sharing utensils or toothbrushes, sharing drinks, or cleaning a pacifier with your mouth can transfer those bacteria early in life. These bacteria live in the mouth and convert sugar into acid, which can damage tooth enamel.
This doesn’t mean families need to panic. It simply highlights why good oral health for parents and caregivers matters too. Healthy habits like brushing twice daily, regular dental visits, and limiting frequent sugary snacks help reduce the amount of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth.
Helping kids build strong oral health habits early gives them the best chance for a lifetime of healthy smiles!
