February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!

The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. The single day observance became a weeklong event in 1955. And in 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

“Attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life. By participating in the annual celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, members of the dental team, parents, teachers and others can help keep children’s smiles beautiful now and for years to come.”

This year’s campaign slogan, is “Water, Nature’s Drink!”

Check out these important facts:

1. Tooth decay is the most common childhood disease.

2. 3 out of 5 children are affected by tooth decay.

3. It is 5 times more common than asthma.

4. 51 million school hours are missed due to oral disease.

5. It is recommended to see the pediatric dentist by your child’s first birthday!

6. Brush your child’s teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Then floss to clean in between the teeth. Parents should help with brushing until they can clearly write their own name.

7. Fluoride helps to make enamel stronger and protects teeth against cavities by fighting acid & erosion.

8. Avoid sticky snacks like gummies and crackers because those will linger on the teeth longer. Instead, try yogurt, cheese, fruits and veggies!

9. Water is the best drink for your teeth AND your body!

September Employee of Month!

October is National Dental Hygiene Month

Dental decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood, affecting 50 percent of children by middle childhood and nearly 70 percent by late adolescence. Luckily, early childhood caries can be easily prevented by instilling a proper oral hygiene routine at an early age. By emphasizing good oral health habits as early as infancy, parents can help lay the foundation for a lifelong, effective oral health routine.

Dental Hygiene Tips:

brush twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste, floss once daily to clean in-between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach, and then rinse with fluoride mouth rinse at least once daily to reduce oral bacteria and maintain fresh breath!

We want to thank our awesome dental hygienists: Stefanie, Jamie and Allison! They spend quality time with each and every patient during their dental cleanings, educating them on how they can improve their oral hygiene habits at home. They review brushing and flossing techniques, and other tips and tricks! We are so thankful for hygienists that truly care about our patients and enjoy taking the extra time they need.

We had a very busy day seeing patients while everyone was out of school for President’s Day! We even had some helpers from Heights Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. Welcome Dr. Adrien Theriot!

This summer we want to give a warm welcome to Smiles for Kids’ new associate, Dr. Adrien Theriot. She has been working at our Heights Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics practice and will now be joining our Smiles for Kids Pediatric Dentistry team as well for two days a week. We are all so EXCITED to have her!

She was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas. Dr. Theriot earned her Bachelors in Science from Baylor University in 2012. She was on the Baylor Songleaders dance team and attended two mission trips to Antigua, Guatemala with her sorority to care for children in orphanages with special healthcare needs where she realized her calling to become a pediatric dentist. She went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Dentistry (UTSD) in 2016. Dr. Theriot earned a Masters of Science in Dentistry and Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from UTSD in 2018 and is currently working towards her board certification and Diplomacy of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Theriot appreciates continuing education and research in dentistry. Her research studies on pediatric zirconia crowns and behavior management techniques are now published in the Journal of Dentistry for Children and the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry.

With a passion for service, Dr. Theriot has devoted her time to many organizations such as San Jose Clinic, Meals on Wheels, Houston Food Bank, Give Kids a Smile, Texas Mission of Mercy, and many Houston area schools to teach children and adolescents about oral hygiene and a career in dentistry. She is also active in organized dentistry, currently serving as chair of the Membership Committee for the Greater Houston Dental Society (GHDS). While in dental school, she was the national vice president for the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and voting delegate to the 2015 American Dental Association (ADA) House of Delegates, along with serving on many other councils and committees for the ADA, ASDA, GHDS, and American Dental Education Association (ADEA).

Dr. Theriot is happily married to her husband Logan, and they have two rescue cats, Tiger Lily and Figaro. They love volunteering their time at Friends for Life No Kill Animal Shelter in the Heights and for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. They also enjoy cooking, gardening, trying new restaurants, being outdoors, spending time with friends and family, traveling and cheering on the Baylor Bears and Houston Astros.

Help us welcome our wonderful assistant, Brittany, into motherhood! She gave birth to the cutest baby boy! Greyson arrived and is doing well! Smiles for Kids wants to wish Brittany and her family a hearty CONGRATULATIONS! Brittany came to visit us with a 3 week old Greyson recently and we couldn’t take our eyes off of him. He is such as beauty! We can’t wait for Brittany to come back to the office in September, but we sure hope that she will have a great time hanging out and bonding with Greyson over the next months!

Smiles for Kids Christmas Party 2018

We had such an amazing time at this year’s Christmas Party! We got together at Dr. Kasia’s home under a Christmas tree. Malgosia had it catered for us so we were able to relax with all the yummy food and fun gifts. Secret Santa was good to us and our famous White Elephant game gave us some major case of laughs! This year we decided to dress up in our best holiday Ugly Sweaters and spread holiday cheer that way. We even had a contest. Who do you think should have won??? Last, but not least, we finally figured out who actually has a good voice and can carry a tune with our karaoke party. Songs were sung loud and clear! In three different languages… Such a fun time getting together for the holidays! Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all our patients!

Holiday Party was a blast! Secret Santa was so super sweet to all and White Elephant gift exchange made us all laugh out loud! Amazing people make amazing teams... We sure are thankful to have one another!

Rudolph Fun Run

We had an amazing time at the “Rudolph Fun Run”. We enjoy being able to give back to our community and hang out with our patients outside of the office.

We are excited to share that Smiles For Kids Pediatric Dentistry will be doing our Toy Drive again this year to help benefit the oncology ward at Texas Children's Hospital. We will be collecting toys from November 20 until December 20.

2017 Fall Festivals

Smiles for Kids Team loves hanging out with our patients at various fall festivals.  Ms. Yvette is always in charge of educating kids and parents on dental health and giving them tips for healthy snacking.  She brings with her Ms. Sugarbug and lots of goodies for the kids.  This fall we've done great festivals, fun runs, bike scavenger hunt in Spring Branch area and in the Heights area of Houston.  We have few more festivals coming up too.  We also help out with school fairs and career days so call our office and ask for Ms. Yvette to schedule your event.

Our 10th Annual Patient Appreciation Party was held at Studio Movie Grill in City Center on Sunday, September 17th. We played games, had a pizza buffet, popcorn and soft drinks, followed by a showing of "RATATOUILLE". We had so much fun with parents, kids and the Smiles for Kids Team.
